Public hospitals

  • National Hospital Abuja, Central Area: federal, 850 beds, established 1999, with a working emergency department.
  • University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada: federal, 520 beds; kidney transplant equipment installed in 2024, new mental health and cardiovascular buildings the same year. It is about 50km from the city centre, which matters in an emergency.
  • Federal Medical Centre, Jabi: federal; a new complex was inaugurated in May 2026.
  • Asokoro and Maitama District Hospitals: run by the FCT Hospitals Management Board, with dialysis, ICU, CT and the main specialties. Maitama's emergency consultation fee rose from N3,500 to N4,700 in May 2025; Gwarinpa General Hospital's general outpatient fee was N2,400.

Private hospitals

  • Nisa Premier Hospital, Jabi: founded 1996, over 200 beds, 24-hour emergency line +234 817 420 9999; accepts most HMOs and international insurers.
  • Garki Hospital, Area 8: FCT-owned, run by Nisa under a concession since 2007; 100 beds, open-heart surgery, kidney transplants, IVF. 08095698080.
  • Cedarcrest Hospitals, Abuja headquarters; Kelina Hospital, Gwarinpa (emergency +234 812 990 8244); Alliance Hospital, Garki (08081111121); Army Command and NAOWA Hospital.
  • None of them publishes consultation fees. A third-party listing quotes Alliance at N2,000 registration and N30,000 consultation; the comparable Lagos private hospitals charged N20,000 to N25,000 plus N8,000 to N10,000 registration in December 2025. Treat both as a guide and ask.

Emergency numbers

  • 112 is the national emergency number. The Federal Ministry of Health's NEMSAS list (August 2026) gives the FCT ambulance lines as 09157892931 and 09157892932.
  • FCT emergency control room: 07057337653, 08061581938, 08032003913 (state directory, June 2026).
  • Keep the hospital's own emergency line as well: Nisa +234 817 420 9999, Kelina +234 812 990 8244. Private ambulances in Nigerian cities typically cost N30,000 to N150,000 depending on distance and equipment.

HMO plans with Abuja networks

  • The larger HMOs list 200 or more facilities in Abuja, including Garki Hospital. Individual plans on published price lists start around N55,000 to N120,000 a year for basic tiers.
  • Upper tiers run to about N420,000 to N450,000 a year, with premium plans above N1 million. Plans designed for people over 55 start around N230,000 and run past N500,000 for ages 55 to 79 (published prices, September 2026).
  • For someone over 65, the plans built for older people cost three to five times the basic tiers. The page on HMOs for an older parent explains the waiting periods and limits.

Home care and care homes

  • Several home-care agencies operate in Abuja, including districts such as Gwarinpa, Durumi and Jabi, and some national agencies cover the city. None publishes prices; the only published Nigerian benchmark is Lagos: caregiver N119,000 to N159,000 a month, registered nurse N219,000 to N259,000 (May 2026).
  • Residential care homes for older people operate in Life Camp, Kurudu, Wuye, Kado, Apo and the Central Business District. None publishes fees; ask for them in writing and for the home's registration.
  • Kinship Visits are in Lagos today. Ask the team about availability in Abuja before making arrangements. The Kinship Plan includes the Kinship care team, Kemi on WhatsApp and one shared record, with a named Kinkeeper once visits are added.

Questions people ask

Which hospital in Abuja for an emergency?

The nearest with a 24-hour emergency department. In the centre that is National Hospital, Nisa Premier, Garki or Maitama District Hospital; Gwagwalada is far. Ring ahead so a bed and a doctor are ready.

Do Abuja hospitals ask for a deposit?

Private hospitals commonly do on admission, as in Lagos. An HMO card with an authorisation code reduces it; cash or transfer from abroad is usually accepted for the balance.
