Why we named a job: the Kinkeeper

The nurse who holds the thread of someone's care needed a name that did not box her in. Care Manager was the wrong one.

By Kinship · 19 September 2026 · 3 min read

Every Kinship Plan has one named person: a registered nurse who does not do the visiting, but who reads every visit report before the family sees it, signs it off, and is the person the family knows by name and by phone. For the first few months we called her the Care Manager, because that is what the job is called in the industry we borrowed it from.

It was the wrong name. Care manager describes someone who manages care. The job is wider than that. She is the one who knows that the member's daughter in Manchester worries more than her son in Lagos does, that the member will not admit to missing a dose, that the neighbour who used to check in has moved. She is holding the kin as much as the care, and the name should say so.

What she does

  • Reads and signs off every visit report before the family sees it.
  • Is introduced to the member by name and phone before the first visit.
  • Reads the pattern across visits, doctors and the family, and says so when something is drifting.
  • Takes the call when something needs arranging, so the family hears one account rather than six.

What she does not do

  • Visit. The nursing bench does the visiting, so that the Kinkeeper can hold more than a handful of members without losing any of them.
  • Diagnose or treat. That stays with the member's doctor and hospital.
  • Decide for the member. The plan is theirs.

The names we turned down

Navigator, which belongs to someone else. Wellkeeper, which fails at the moment a family needs the person most. Care Manager, for the reason above. Kinkeeper, one word, was the one that still made sense at a bereavement, at a birth, and on an ordinary Tuesday.

The name changed on the site in September 2026. The registration, and the person, did not.
