Why do video calls and voice notes matter for an older parent?
A video call lets you see how your parent looks, not only how they sound: weight loss, a swollen ankle, an untidy room or an unopened medicine box. You can also ask them to hold up a letter or prescription.
Voice notes help people who find typing hard because of eyesight, stiff fingers or reading confidence. Your parent speaks when they like and you listen when your time zone allows.
How should you set up the phone before teaching anything?
Do this on a visit, or ask a trusted local helper while you watch on a call. Update WhatsApp first, because buttons move between versions.
- Make the text bigger. On Android, open Settings, search for Font size and then Display size, and move each slider to the right. On iPhone, go to Settings, Accessibility, Display & Text Size, Larger Text.
- Turn the ringer and media volume up fully.
- Connect to home Wi-Fi if there is any. If not, set up a monthly data bundle.
- Save family numbers with simple names, such as "Tunde London".
- Add the main family contacts as favourites: press and hold their chat, then choose Add to favourites from the menu. They then also appear at the top of the Calls tab.
- Pin the family chat to the top of the list: press and hold the chat, then tap the pin icon.
- Turn on two-step verification (Settings, Account, Two-step verification) and write the PIN down somewhere safe, away from the phone.
How does your parent answer and make a WhatsApp video call?
These steps follow WhatsApp's Android help pages. On iPhone the call buttons are in the same places, and Settings sits at the bottom of the screen rather than in the three-dot menu.
- To answer when the phone is locked, swipe up on the incoming video call screen.
- To answer when the phone is unlocked, tap Video on the incoming call pop-up.
- To make a call, open the chat with the person and tap the video camera icon at the top.
- Alternatively, open the Calls tab, tap the new call button, find the person and tap the video icon.
- To end the call, tap the red button.
- Practise both ways on the same day: you calling them, then them calling you.
How do they record a voice note or send a photo?
On recent versions, WhatsApp's help page describes a single tap on the microphone to start recording, with no need to hold. Older versions use press and hold.
- Open the chat and tap the microphone at the bottom right.
- Speak normally.
- Tap send when finished, or tap the bin or X to throw the recording away.
- On an older version, press and hold the microphone, speak, and let go to send. For a longer message, slide the thumb up to the padlock so recording carries on hands-free, then tap send.
- To send a photo of a medicine box, a letter or a test result, open the chat, tap the camera icon beside the message box, take the picture and tap send.
- To send a photo already on the phone, tap the paperclip on Android (the + on iPhone), choose Gallery or Photos, pick the picture and tap send.
How much data does a video call use in Nigeria?
WhatsApp does not publish a per-minute figure. In a test published on 12 August 2026, Techloy found that a WhatsApp video call used 81.5MB in 12 minutes, about 6.8MB a minute or roughly 400MB an hour. Real use varies with signal and picture quality.
BusinessDay reported on 11 May 2026 that Nigerian internet users paid an effective average of around ₦800 per gigabyte in January to March 2026, and that daily bundles cost more per gigabyte than longer ones. On those figures, a 30-minute video call uses about 200MB, or roughly ₦160 of data.
Voice notes and photos use far less. Calls over Wi-Fi do not touch the bundle, and WhatsApp has a Use less data for calls switch under Settings, Storage and data, which lowers call quality to save data.
Which problems and scams should you prepare your parent for?
The best-known scam aimed at parents is the "Hi Mum" or "Hi Dad" message, in which someone says they are a son or daughter on a new number and asks for money urgently. Which? reported on 7 September 2022 that Action Fraud had received 1,235 reports of criminals posing as loved ones on WhatsApp between 3 February and 21 June 2022, with losses of £1.5m.
A second scam takes over the account itself. A message, often from a friend's hijacked account, says a six-digit code was sent by mistake and asks for it back. That code is the registration code for your parent's own WhatsApp, and sharing it hands the account to the criminal. In June 2025 the Nigeria Police Force reported breaking up a syndicate that had hijacked the WhatsApp accounts of prominent Nigerians.
Agree two rules: never share a WhatsApp code, and never send money without first calling back on the number already saved. Common technical problems have quick fixes:
- No sound: press the volume button during the call and check the speaker icon is on.
- The other person cannot hear: check the microphone icon on the call screen is not crossed out, and that WhatsApp has microphone permission (phone Settings, Apps, WhatsApp, Permissions).
- Black screen or no picture: remove any case or sticker over the camera lens, tap the camera icon on the call screen, and check camera permission in the same place.
- Phone storage full: in WhatsApp go to Settings, Storage and data, Manage storage, and delete large videos first.
- Call keeps dropping: move nearer a window, switch to Wi-Fi or check the bundle.
What should go on the printed cheat sheet?
Print this list in large type and keep it next to the phone. Kemi, Kinship's WhatsApp companion, works in the same app, so a parent who can send a voice note can reach Kinship too.
- Answer a video call: swipe up, or tap Video.
- Make a video call: open the chat and tap the camera at the top.
- Send a voice note: tap the microphone, speak, tap send.
- Send a photo: tap the camera beside the message box, take the picture, tap send.
- Louder: press the volume button on the side during the call.
- Never share a WhatsApp code with anyone, including family.
- Asked for money: call back on the saved number first.
- Data running low: use Wi-Fi or top up before a call.
Questions people ask
Does a WhatsApp video call cost anything beyond data?
WhatsApp does not charge for calls. The call uses mobile data or Wi-Fi, so on mobile data the cost depends on the bundle your parent buys.
What if your parent does not read well?
Video calls, voice notes and photos need no typing. With the family chat pinned and family saved as favourites, your parent only needs to recognise a name or photo at the top of the screen and three icons: the camera, the microphone and send.
Can a local helper set this up instead of you?
Yes. A trusted relative, neighbour or helper can follow the setup steps while you watch on a video call. Ask them to give the two-step verification PIN to your parent rather than keep it, and remind your parent that no helper ever needs a WhatsApp code.
How can your parent tell a real family message from a scam?
Agree that any request for money is checked by calling back on the number already saved, not the one that sent the message. Which? has also suggested asking for a voice note, though a call-back on a saved number is the firmer check.
