Care options in Lagos compared: care home, caregiver agency, home nurse, or visits

In Lagos an older person can be looked after at home by a caregiver (from about N119,000 a month), at home by a registered nurse (from about N219,000), in a private care home (from about N79,000 to N249,000 where prices are published), or through regular nurse visits with health benefits alongside (Kinship, from £60 a month for visits). The right one depends on how much help they need each day, not on which is cheapest.

The four options

  • Caregiver from an agency, live-in or daily: N119,000 to N159,000 a month (2026). Help with meals, washing, mobility, company and reminders. Not clinically trained.
  • Registered nurse from an agency: N219,000 to N259,000 a month; nurse plus caregiver from about N329,000. For someone whose condition needs clinical watching at home.
  • Private care home: Lagos has a small number (Ikorodu, Ikeja, Surulere, Fadeyi, Mushin among the areas). One publishes prices, N79,000 to N249,000 a month; the rest quote on request. Lagos State runs one government home, at Yaba.
  • Regular visits with health benefits: a qualified nurse visits one, two or four times a month for up to three hours (£60, £110 or £200 a month), each visit written up and reviewed by a named Kinkeeper; Kinship Well from £39 a month adds health benefits through a hospital network and a doctor to talk to.

Who regulates it

In Lagos State, HEFAMAA (the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency) registers home care services and private nursing homes. Its home care category requires at least one registered nurse, nurse aides and a supervising medical practitioner, and equipment including oxygen and an ambulance. Ask any agency or home for its HEFAMAA registration.

Which suits which situation

  • Well and independent, family abroad wants to know how they are: visits on a rhythm, doctor in the app.
  • A long-term condition, otherwise managing: health benefits plus visits that include appointments, with the Kinkeeper reading the pattern.
  • Needs help every day but is safe at home: a caregiver, with a nurse visiting to keep a qualified eye.
  • Needs clinical care daily: a home nurse, or a care home chosen in person.
  • No longer safe at home: a care home, with visits continuing there.

Questions for any provider

  • Are you registered with HEFAMAA, and can I see it?
  • Who exactly will come, what are their qualifications, and what happens if they are off?
  • How will the family hear what happened, and how often?
  • What is the escalation route if something is found, and who decides?
  • What is the notice period and what happens if we stop?
